#ICan Family Camp 2019 – A Runaway Success
It was an absolute delight to welcome 18 families at the first #ICan Family Camp at Longtown Outdoor Education Centre in the Brecon Beacons last September
The families invited all had one child with a limb difference, siblings were also included so it really was a weekend for the whole family.
All activities were adapted so that everyone could join in the fun and games. Each family had their own room and were split into two groups – the Lions and the Leopards. Each day was spent with the group including meals giving families the chance to form strong friendships with new and old friends. Evenings saw everyone brought together in the social room.
Activities included canoeing, paddle-boarding, climbing wall and forest school for the younger children. We had a really successful campfire despite the torrential rain and there was lots of laughter, determination and support from everyone.
We were thrilled to have Eclectic Coaching join us for the weekend running two morning warm-up sessions. Not only did they have us doing some crazy routines, but they were also available to speak with families about getting the best use out of prosthetics.
Each family received a welcome pack including a shower gel donated by Steps; cuddly Build-a-Bear donated by Build-a-Bear headquarters; water bottle from Blatchfords; activity pack from GALT toys; LimbPower Enamel mug with either the LimbPower Leopard or Lion on it, and of course a couple of fabulous #ICan T-shirts. Coffees and teas were kindly donated by Rombouts coffee.
All the families were included in two interactive workshops with Starworks. These workshops included updates on the NHS funds for research and how the funded projects are progressing, the children were made ambassadors for the Starworks project and received a special passport and their first sticker. When the passport is full the children will receive an Amazon voucher – a great incentive for them all.
We have received some amazing feedback from families:
“It was great that all the children were treated the same” parent of four attending the #ICan Family Camp
“It was so nice not to have to deal with anyone staring and to be with people who understood the things that we deal with every day” parent of child attending the #ICan Family Camp
As ever there are many to thank , to the amazing professionals who gave up their time to offer workshops with prosthetists, physiotherapists and OT’s, the fantastic staff at Longtown, as well as the three charities who put in a lot of work to make sure that everything went smoothly and of course, last but not least, everyone who attended.
#ICan Camps are a collaboration between the Limbless Association, Steps and LimbPower with Reach joining us in 2020.
